Helping a Friend

Seven years ago when I sold my first book, I was invited to dinner with a group of authors. I ended up sitting next to Alvin Salima. He was fun to talk with, and in the course of our conversation, I learned several months before he'd had a kidney transplant. I met his wife, Candace, as well. I remember coming away thinking what a nice couple.

As time went by our paths crossed many times at writers' conferences and political rallies. I came to admire them both immensely.

In the fall of 2014, Alvin passed away. His kidney transplant had failed. Before he died, he spent a great deal of time in the hospital. Now, a huge debt has fallen on Candace, and to top it off, she can't find a job. She's brilliant and has a strong work ethic. I know this kills her to ask for help, but she's found herself between a massive rock and a tough-as-iron hard place.

Being the enterprising woman that she is, Candace decided to start a business which would help authors promote their work. She's amazing at this and has three different packages: Bronze, Gold, and Platinum.

If you don't need promotion, but you'd like to help Candace pay down the hospital debt, she has a account. I know she'd really appreciate anything you could give.

Undaunted Hope by Jody Hedlund

Jody Hedlund’s new book, Undaunted Hope, is a story of redemption. The main character, Tessa Taylor, has a past she’s not proud of and hopes the people in Eagle Harbor will never find out her secret, especially since she has come to teach their children.

Of course, right away controversy finds her as the town has never had a woman teacher and there is no place for her to stay. Percival Updegraff, superintendent and chief mine clerk realizes they have no other options and says she can stay at his house through the winter.

However, Alex Bojorklund happens to over hear this exchange and knows Updegraff is an unscrupulous man and up to no good when it comes to the beautiful new teacher. Alex takes her to the home of a family in need of a lodger. And though Tessa must share the attic bedroom with their eldest daughter, she soon becomes comfortable in her new surroundings. She’s determined to become indispensable to Eagle Harbor by throwing herself into her work not only teaching their children during the day, but also teaching the adults who want to learn more at night.

But Updegraff has his sights set on her. He is a man who will do anything to get what he wants. And he wants Tessa.

Will Alex be able to keep her safe?

You’ll have to read the book and find out.

Jody Hedlund is a master storyteller and fills this story with wonderful characters the reader grows to love.

I received a copy of this novel to review, but I reviewed it because I loved it.
